Sep. 18th, 2004 09:10 amIt was the end of the summer, and bunch of my friends from home, who all happened to be in central/north Jersey, wanted to go to RenFaire. But this was some sort of strange Renfaire that was open late into the night, and they wanted to go after work. But by the time I got up there, it was quite late, and we decided not to go.
I'm not sure if this was the next day or a different dream, but then there was something about a music competition. You know, the things you did while in high school. I may have been in high school, but Jawaad's presence sort of kills that theory. Anyway, I don't remember who else was perfoming with me, but we were going to perform a Mozart trumpet quintet. You know, 2 violins, viola, cello, trumpet. Sort of like the clarinet quintet. Unfortunately, the competition was declared over after the performance artish version of a whole lot of 20th century pop (including some reggae, Europop, etc.) . This also involved mostly strings, with the beats and such played on some sort of PA. It was very weird. The only bit I remember was at one point three double-basses just came out on stage and started playing along with what started as a quartet. So I never got to play the Mozart trumpet quintet. Or hear it. Which begs the question, what would Mozart's trumpet quintet sound like?
Ultimately, I don't think the trumpet of Mozart's time would have been well-suited for playing things like melodies, though Haydn's concerto, written not soon after Mozart's time, involves quite a bit of melody work. There's also the slight issue of volume, though there are ways around this. I'm probably not going to experiment with this genre (either in Mozart's style or my own), but it's something to think about.
