Decisions

I'm in the market for a new MP3 player. I've had only three portably music players in the last 13 years; the latest is 3.5 years old and suffering in battery life and capacity.

The problem is that the perfect player doesn't exist. I'd like something physically small with more than 32 GB of storage space (I have 35 GB of MP3s but am willing to pare them down somewhat, but I'd like significant expansion space); flash memory is preferable. Linux compatibility is reasonably important. I think I've covered all the major players below, but if there's something awesome out there that I've missed, please let me know (there should bet an MP3 player equivalent to dpreview.com, but there isn't).

The Archos has all sorts of nifty features (Wi-Fi, web browser) and is on deep discount at Amazon, but I'd like to move to flash-based and it's just too big to shove in a pocket. The O2 is similarly too big. Neither gets great battery life. The X-Fi's non-touch screen interface pales in comparison to the touch screen players. The interface on the previous edition is a little better, but hard to find. Neither folds media from the SD card to the main library - this is not good.

I think it's between the D2 and the iPod Classic. My gut is to go with the D2. In a year, if I want to go beyond 32 GB, hopefully prices on large SDHC cards will have dropped (based on the way 16 GB prices have fallen off, I imagine 32 GB will too).

Have you used one or more of these guys? Any thoughts? Am I being dumb with my anti-iPod, anti-hard drive, anti-big device bias?
