There's a carton of "Organic Free Range Chicken Soup Broth" sitting in the refridgerator at home. When will this country's obsession with organic things cease? And how does one make free range broth? Does one just use really big tubs so that the broth can theoretically go wherever it wants? Are there springs and/or aquifers that have been converted to containing broth? Or are they seeding clouds with chicken soup and collecting it when it falls? Really, is it so bad to have your broth made in a kitchen rather than grown organically in the wild?

Sigh.

My grandfather (incidentally, a chicken farmer) always described Army chicken soup as where they made the soup and then marched a chicken through it. . .

My basic problem with the word "organic" is that to me it means "containing carbon-hydrogen bonds" rather than "Free of preservatives, pesticides, antibiotics and hormones." By this reckoning, my plastic water bottle is organic, as is paper, as are all chicken soup components except salt and water.

But I am convinced that somewhere, there are cartons of chicken soup roaming freely, out by the buffalo, deer and antelope.
