The joy was in knowing I finished everything, solved all the puzzles. The ending, well, that was dumb.
Myst was much less nasty than I remember. And my friend and I had a hint book for the whole thing. But I breezed through Channelwood, Selenitic went quickly, except for the bit where I didn't see the red and blue pages, even though they were siting in plain sight. The labyrinth was cool - I mapped the whole thing out. The auditory clue system was really cool, too bad I never figured it out until after I had solved the whole thing. The other two ages, Stoneship and Mechanical, gave me a bit of trouble in the exact same way. I really liked the whole Stoneship age, with the three pumps and the various little areas. Unfortunately, I just couldn't see the hidden doors to the compass room. I was less taken by the mechanical age, though all the stuff in Sirrus's room was pretty cool. But again, the hidden doors behind the thrones were very hard to see and just obnoxious. Those are the two puzzles I liked the least - I really liked the puzzles where everything was laid out in front of me and I just had to figure out what to do with it.
With regards to the ending, it was sort of a copout. Put in the sixth red or blue page, and you get stuck in the book, while one of the sons tears out pages and laughs at you. Put the page from the dock marker switch box in the green book and Atrus tells you that you can continue exploring the world and that he may need you later. Really, it gets you nowhere. So there's nothing special for getting out of the game the "right" way. At least Atrus could give you a book to get you back to the real world.
Channelwood is my favorite age, unsurprisingly. It's got a really cool set of puzzles. Stoneship is my second favorite, followed by Selenitic and then Mechanical. Selenitic is prettier than Stoneship, but Stoneship is much more functional - there actually are living quarters and things. Of course, Channelwood has living quarters and more, which help propel it to the top.
I maintain I used my time better in the last 48 hours than those of you obsessively reading HP&THBP. I slept, I played a great game, and I played a very good game of softball this morning. Also cookies and ice cream at
eclectic_boy's place (thanks
scibilia for the dough). All in all, a very good weekend

Date: 2005-07-18 03:21 am (UTC)My personal weekend story involved HP-HBP, some boys who don't want to grow up, a girl named Wendy, bananas, trees, and several walks in welcoming rain. Also cheesesteaks, boggle, writing on mirrors, Dance Dance Revolution, GRE preparation, and an utter lack of ennui.
This genius didn't even possess (let alone lament) any chronic malaise. All part of a well-balanced weekend.
