I don't think I've ever seen this. Torre moved Bernie Williams from DH to CF, thus eliminating the DH. Mariano Rivera is slated to hit in the 3 position in the order. I wonder when the last pitcher batted in an AL game.

Well, if he actually bats it will be because the Yanks have a big lead.

It's been a surreal night for baseball - did you SEE the Houston/Atlanta game? Craziness, we started watching it cause the Eagles game was to depressing...

I'm not paying all that close attention, but isn't that an extremely pessimistic thing for Torre to do? Bernie's ancient, and he's well past being a decent center fielder. Putting him in center at the end of a close game weakens the defense a lot. There's only one purpose it could serve: giving him one last time in the outfield. But that's only true if the Yankees lose ... and Torre shouldn't be assuming that, nor should he be making it more likely by weakening his defense! (OK, it worked out, but still....)

No. In the 8th inning of game 4, Sunday, right after the 3 position had already hit. As Will and I pointed out (between us), it's more alarming because of putting Williams in CF than Rivera in the batting order.

And man, this whole DH thing is weird. Silly AL.

As the commentators pointed out, in the event that they got to Rivera's place in the order, the fewest possible runs scored in the ninth inning was two (plus two outs, and loading the bases.) In the event that the Angels scored enough runs in the top of the ninth that that would have been insufficient to walk off, Rivera would have been yanked then.
