Nov. 22nd, 2005 08:39 pmSo I spent a good chunk of the day listening to 2+ hours of a podcast (part 1 / part 2) of Ken Bethea (lead guitarist for the Old 97's) recording this show with two guys from Dallas. There are a few bits about the Old 97's, but more about music in general. I'd recommend you give a listen, though I warn you there are a few chauvinistic moments.
To me, the highlights come when they're critiquing, on first listen, some generally horrible demos. For the first batch, they offer some constructive criticism (production good, songwriting awful, you should listen to the Modern Lovers, TMBG's Flood, and John Coltrane), although they do rag on them a bit too. However, it really gets good on the second half, when they just rip these things to shreds. And the revelation comes toward the end when the three commentators start singing along, adding (or reinforcing) background vocals.
So here's what I want to hear. I want a couple of musicians and/or critics and/or comics MST3King bad demos. I spent enough time around WSRN to know how many bad demos there are out there (like the one on the podcast where it's guy singing a song about his cat, and he has his cat miked through the whole thing). So make fun of the lyrics, rip the production, or make up new background lyrics. As long as the hosts are funny and have good music sense, I think it'd be a hoot.
But maybe it's just me.
