For all that Monopoly is maligned, it's still a pretty good game. I got thumped pretty soundly this evening by the family. Remember kids, a position of strength is a position of strength. If you have a monopoly and a lot of the cards the other people need to get monopolies, hang onto those cards and grind it out.

Moments:

"Baby steps"
- my brother, after I rolled a four (having rolled a three the previous turn, or something like that), heading around the third turn towards boardwalk, on which there were two houses.

My mom, paying off my father for something, put together a pile of cash and properties and threw in the TV remote control. It was pretty funny. Or maybe you just had to be there.

Man, my family won't play monopoly with me. Maybe because the only complete Monopoly set we have is Star Wars Monopoly, and only I ever get excited about playing it. :(

The original is the only way to play. To change the theme is to ruin the charm of the game.

The summer I was in Poitiers, one of my classmates bought the French Monopoly during our first couple days there, and it lived in the convent kitchen for the rest of the summer. There were at least three games a day played by various people, but the rules were that every die roll and destination spot on the board had to be recorded in a notebook. Several of us worked to tabulate the statistics meticulously and started seriously playing the odds and making side-bets by the end of the summer, with several hundred games worth of data.

I'm not sure what the nuns thought about this, if they ever realized what was going on.

Side bets?

Some SWILlie's dad published a paper on Monopoly. I think it was Mr. Bernstein.
