Jan. 15th, 2006 11:35 amWindows is more or less online. I've gone to basically an all-black look, which works fine, although there are a few spots where there isn't enough contrast. still need to find a background picture, but that's not a big deal. Also need to get rid of the damn Alt-Tab powertoy, which is just too slow on this machine. Maybe I'll use it when I get a new box. Maybe.
Linux still having issues. I'm think I'm going to download standard ubuntu, play around with both Gnome and KDE (or another window manager - suggestions appreciated) for a few days, see which one I like, then freshly install and stick to it.

Date: 2006-01-17 02:34 am (UTC)I'm leaning a bit towards KDE at the moment because 1) KPilot successfully backs up my Palm-based device, and 2) it uses C++ more than CORBA, and thus seems slightly simpler, and more type-safe, than GNOME. My incredibly ad-hoc memory usage checks seem to show KDE using less memory (GNOME's Nautilus file browser, in particular, seems to be caching everything under the sun.)
I'd say Ubuntu is a reasonable choice; it and Debian both have Synaptic, which for me is a killer app, but more things get autodetected under Ubuntu for me.
As for the e-mail beast: I think I've got to set up IMAP real soon now. That way, I can pick one mailer that can archive everything older than two weeks for posterity, and I can use a client at work and at home, and have most things there. Or else I should just stop archiving list traffic, since someone else is already doing that... would be sensible, but makes searching it harder. Though ssh-to-mutt is also working.
