I use genre as my primary means for finding albums to listen to on the MP3 player. Now that I'm planning on putting a non-trivial number of live shows on, should I create a Live genre, or should I file a live show where the 'album' would otherwise belong? If I create a Live genre, should I retag conceived live albums (amalgamations of multiple shows) to be Live, or should they stay with the studio albums?

Really, it's been five days since I last posted and I don't want the LJ to start developing rust.

This is why I want genre to be replaced with free tagging: tag 'em as both!

I use the "comments" field for all this stuff in iTunes. Then I can create Smart Playlists by searching for any number of different text strings and'd or or'd from any specified field.

I think it depends on your listening desires. For me, I would put live stuff in the genre that the artist would otherwise go into, because for most artists their live stuff is going to be most similar to their own recorded stuff. On the other hand, if you're going to want to just listen to something live, and be less interested in whether it's folk or jazz, then the live genre might be the way to go.

i file my live stuff in the same genre as the artist would be not-live. But I don't typically search by genre except in special cases.

My MP3 player does browsing as GENRE>ARTIST>ALBUM>TITLE, with the ability to jump in at any point in that hierarchy. If I'm trying to grab something, picking genre first shortens the amount of browsing I have to do. Also makes things easier if I'm in a mood for something, but I'm not exactly sure what.
