Mmm...

Rachael Yamagata was underwhelming.  It seemed like every song was about a breakup of hers, and it just got old.  "Worn Me Down," the song that got major XPN airplay, was cool, with the guitar player looping several parts and then playing another.  It was her playing piano, acoustic guitar, and electric bass, an electric guitar, drums, violin, cello.  I think the cello is not used enough in pop/rock and it's a really cool sound, but who am I to talk?

Fountains of Wayne were great.  The first few songs were sort of blah and all ran together, but the set really picked up.  One of the best moments in the set (and where it really started to pick up) was, ironically enough, when the two guitarists were both playing acoustics on Hey Julie, which really brought the crowd into it for the first time.  They also brought the roadies out to play percussion on that, which was really neat.  Things opened up and rocked more after that, and it was good.  A gigantic container ship went up river as they started their encore, which turned into this great jam which ended with the drummer and bassist jamming with the lead guitarist doing his thing for a while, then putting into a feedback loop and leaving it propped up against the amp and walking off stage.  The sound unfortunately sucked for them too; there were more squeaks than a elementary school clarinet concert.  I really should get "Welcome Interstate Managers", there are quite a few good songs on it.

You're welcome to tag along tomorrow or Sunday, tickets are now $20 for either day and available at the door, lemme know if you want in, schedule information is a few posts back (too lazy to find the link).

Oh, and another thing.  There was a Swat prof wandering around.  At least, I assume it was a prof.  He was youngish, had two kids, daughter may or may not have been 10ish and was wearing the 'great conversation stopper' physics t-shirt, looked like a younger son.  He was wearing a swat hat (I'm guessing he was the prof, not the wife, but who knows).  Saw them in the Ben and Jerry's line, but they didn't say anything (I was wearing my swat shirt).
