Mmm...

Rachael Yamagata was underwhelming.  It seemed like every song was about a breakup of hers, and it just got old.  "Worn Me Down," the song that got major XPN airplay, was cool, with the guitar player looping several parts and then playing another.  It was her playing piano, acoustic guitar, and electric bass, an electric guitar, drums, violin, cello.  I think the cello is not used enough in pop/rock and it's a really cool sound, but who am I to talk?

Fountains of Wayne were great.  The first few songs were sort of blah and all ran together, but the set really picked up.  One of the best moments in the set (and where it really started to pick up) was, ironically enough, when the two guitarists were both playing acoustics on Hey Julie, which really brought the crowd into it for the first time.  They also brought the roadies out to play percussion on that, which was really neat.  Things opened up and rocked more after that, and it was good.  A gigantic container ship went up river as they started their encore, which turned into this great jam which ended with the drummer and bassist jamming with the lead guitarist doing his thing for a while, then putting into a feedback loop and leaving it propped up against the amp and walking off stage.  The sound unfortunately sucked for them too; there were more squeaks than a elementary school clarinet concert.  I really should get "Welcome Interstate Managers", there are quite a few good songs on it.

You're welcome to tag along tomorrow or Sunday, tickets are now $20 for either day and available at the door, lemme know if you want in, schedule information is a few posts back (too lazy to find the link).

Oh, and another thing.  There was a Swat prof wandering around.  At least, I assume it was a prof.  He was youngish, had two kids, daughter may or may not have been 10ish and was wearing the 'great conversation stopper' physics t-shirt, looked like a younger son.  He was wearing a swat hat (I'm guessing he was the prof, not the wife, but who knows).  Saw them in the Ben and Jerry's line, but they didn't say anything (I was wearing my swat shirt).

What was he wearing? What did he and his wife look like? If the kid was wearing a physics t-shirt, he's probably an astro/physics prof. Age rules out John Boccio, Peter Collings, and Frank Moscatelli. Age of kids rules out Doc Brown (has a college sophomore and several toddlers) and Catherine Crouch for sure. I don't think Paul Bloom has children. So it could be David Cohen, or Eric Jensen, maybe Carl Grossman or Amy Bug, or the lab instructors.

Doc has a college age daughter and two daughters who are approximately 9 and 6. I don't think Peter has children; I know Frank doesn't. John's youngest is in grad school. Catherine has a son who looks about 8 and a daughter who is slightly older or slightly younger, I forget which (I've only met them twice), but we can rule her out because she wasn't here when that shirt was made (likewise, we can rule out Paul). Dave has two daughters who are pretty much the same age as Doc's younger daughters. Carl has a teenage daughter, a son who is somewhere between 11 and 14 (it's hard to remember these sorts of things because they've changed in the four years I was at Swat--when I first met them, Doc's younger daughter was just learning to speak), and a daughter who is about the same age as Dave and Doc's older daughters. Amy has a teenage son, I think, and a son who is also about the same age as all those other children, and possibly another older child as well. Eric has two sons who are approximately 5 and 3. I don't think Prue has children; I don't know about Mary Ann.

Of all of those profs, the only one who looks "youngish" and has children about the right age is Dave. So if it was actually a younger daughter, not a younger son, it probably was him.

Peter definitely had kids; he's a grandfather, w/a picture of his grandchild on his webpage. Plus, I remember how he was familiar with the Princeton area (ie, roads near my home) because his son went to grad school there. I'm pretty sure Doc's littler kids (from his second marriage, I think) are younger than 9 and 6. There's at least 1 who's still is a toddler, or at least seemed like one, when I was over at his house last summer.

Try the Physics faculty photos, probably the easiest way to figure it out. Is it any one of those?
