Quite possibly the best game of Power Grid I've played. [livejournal.com profile] irilyth, [livejournal.com profile] think_too_much, and [livejournal.com profile] uncleamos on BSW. We were cash tight the entire game. We emptied the power plant market. Completely. There was no rushing to 17 to end the game. The game plodded alonjg, plodded along. Eventually, I had 34 (N -> 5), 30 (GGG -> 6) and 46 (HHH -> 7). I was the only one at 18, due to the right distribution of plants and the right plants being missing (31 CCC->6, 38 GGG->7, 39 N->6, and 29 H->4), and so eventually I won, luckily nobody could afford to build to 17 before I got to 18 (and everyone but [livejournal.com profile] uncleamos got to 17 that turn). Awesome I say, awesome.

I had a bizarre dream. There was something wrong with the el. Somehow, they had managed to get a few P42 Genesis diesels into the tunnel. Never mind the gauge issues. Or the fact that they're, you know, diesels operating in a tunnel (although TSOR reveals the existance of dual-mode Geneses that run off third-rail, but I didn't know this at the time). Eventually, a train came that was supposed to take me where I was going, or something. The cars weren't M-4s, I think they were supposed to be the CTA cars they used on the P&W when the Bullets were at the end of their lifetime and the N-5s were late. But again, there's a gauge issue. Also, some of them had signboards and some didn't, like Silverliner IIs and IIIs. So I got where I was going, did what I had to do, then realized that I needed to go back to work (this being the middle of the afternoon) and that I had left all of my stuff someplace else (possibly in the vicinity of 34th St.). So I took Regional Rail to something like 38th st (the details are fuzzy), coming down from the elevated station on a narrow spiraling wrought-iron staircase (like the bell tower, but (thankfully) wider), where at the bottom I got into a brief discussion with someone over HC access, and me saying something to the effect of that the system has been grandfathered until 2009, or something. It was strange.

I didn't sleep late enough, as evidenced by the time at which this post is being made. I was lying in bed, trying to get more sleep, when I was jolted out of fuzzyland by whiiiiirrrrrrrrrrr and then, a few seconds later, whiirr-click-ca-click-rrrrrrr-beep beep.

There's not a more wonderful feeling in the world than knowing that you're going to have to reset all your clocks when you wake up, and that your computers have all just reset themselves. [/sarcasm]

How Zombies Work

Possibly the best hardware review ever

iPod nano, uh, stress testing

Sorry, it's earlier than it should be, and these things amused me when I first read them (well, I haven't read the zombies yet, but dude!, zombies).

EDIT: I also want to see if that last link makes [livejournal.com profile] ultranurd cry.

I was going to write a long post about trying to figure out how to classify classical music using ID3 tags so that it works with my MP3 player organization scheme, but the method I already have is pretty clearly ideal. That being said, if you have a method that works well for you, feel free to share.

So I'll ask a somewhat related question. Does anyone from Wind Ensemble remember playing Vaughn Williams's Toccata Marziale? It starts sorta like this:

I'm pretty sure I've played it, and I'm pretty sure it was in Wind Ensemble. This was bothering me Friday. In other (related news), I have a new CD. Assuming I'm not crazy re: above, there's only one piece on the CD I haven't played. Ah-hah: here was the LJ post I've been meaning to write.

I have this love-hate relationship with pieces I've played. I don't want to hear anything from Damn Yankees or Pippin ever again. But I really like Sibelius's 2nd, which we played Soph. year. And last week, WRTI played Tschaik 4, and it was awesome to listen to (on the coincidence front, 'RTI played Beethoven 9 that same day. That's the SCO's 2004-2005 rep. in one day of programming). Maybe it has something to do with the musical experience vs. the concert experience, I don't know.

I'm going to tie this all together with the new CD I got, which is full of pieces I've played. The two Holst Military Suites, the Vaughan Williams Toccata Marziale (which I know I've played - I don't have the tonal memory to have build up the strong memories of the piece that I had listening Friday having only listened to it once before on Wednesday) and Folk Song Suite. I've not played Holst's Hammersmith, which closes the CD, but one must have some new music.

EDIT: If someone wants to poke through the program archives in Underhill (probably in the seminar room, unless they've moved) and let me know whether the WE played the piece, I'd say thank you. But I really don't expect anyone to do this for me.
