Quick, name a good rock song that's slow. Feel free to answer with more than one.

More on this later.

So I've been trying to figure out what it is that rubs me the wrong way about indie rock. And I think what it comes down to is that it doesn't rock enough. It's all about changing styles, mixing things up, and it just doesn't come across well to me.

What is it that draws me to indie? It's often the singles I hear on WXPN. But I'm not going to go out and get an album based on one song, I've got to like a few. And on a few occasions, I've picked up whole albums. And they just don't do it for me. I think it's because indie rock doesn't do slow very well. And yet they try and do slow. A lot. And so the albums just bog down. I mean, I look to rock music because it, well, rocks. And if it doesn't rock, what's the point?

Anyway, what brings this on is Spoon's Gimme Fiction album, which I picked up from emusic.com last night. It doesn't have a slow song, it doesn't have anything super fast, it all just sits in the same pocket. And I like it. The styles vary by song, which keeps it interesting, but it never loses its energy. And because that's what I'm looking for in this style of music, I like it.

Monopoly

For all that Monopoly is maligned, it's still a pretty good game. I got thumped pretty soundly this evening by the family. Remember kids, a position of strength is a position of strength. If you have a monopoly and a lot of the cards the other people need to get monopolies, hang onto those cards and grind it out.

Moments:

"Baby steps"
- my brother, after I rolled a four (having rolled a three the previous turn, or something like that), heading around the third turn towards boardwalk, on which there were two houses.

My mom, paying off my father for something, put together a pile of cash and properties and threw in the TV remote control. It was pretty funny. Or maybe you just had to be there.
