Among other places, I went to Ikea today and picked up two things. I'm pretty sure I'm going to need a second lamp; while this one is much more pleasant than the desk lamps that otherwise illuminate my room, it just isn't quite bright enough. Two of them will look nice, and they have nifty floor switches so I can toggle one off, if I want the softer lighting, while still having them both controlled by the wall switch.

I'm starting to develop a coherent plan for my furniture. I have a bed. I have a dresser. I have a table as a desk - I think it's a better fit in the living room, and would like something a little more desklike. I'm getting a file cabinet from home, I'm planning to get something like this (in birch, unclear whether I'll get the 4' or the 5' flavor) and supporting it on the file cabinet and one of these, which will double nicely as a computer stand. The file cabinet is white, but I think I'd rather have the table top and trestle in natural wood, rather than a matching white. Two of these should meet my shelving needs, and I'll add a multimedia rack or two (or three) to store CDs. I think I also want this in the natural wood, rather than the black. The black looks good online, but it's not as unifom in the store, and isn't nearly as good looking. Layout should be roughly as follows.

The Xs are bedside tables. The Ls are the lamps, referenced above. The Bs are the short bookshelf I have now. The chest is the wicker chest currently serving as the coffee table; I'm working on the replacement for that too.
