Nov. 9th, 2006 06:49 pmRIP Tower, you will be missed.
Picked up 5 CDs on Tuesday. I expect OCMS's Big Iron World and Les Claypool's Of Whales and Woe to appear in my top 10 next month. Grace Potter's Nothing But the Water is a 2005, but might make it as well. The disc of Saint-Saens solo organ works is not what quite I expected, but it's still quite good. CD 5 isn't a clunker, per say, but it could be much better. I've been on the lookout for Corelli's Op. 6 Concerti Grosso for a while, and I grabbed one when I had the chance. Problem is, the record dates from 1966. The sound quality is fine, but the performances are extremely heavy. The fiddles are generally ok, less vibrato would be nice though. The cello, on the other hand, dominates the sound. And, though it's completely reasonable, the use of organ in the continuo bothers me slightly, but not as much as the cello. That being said, it could be much, much worse (Calals doing the Brandenburgs, for example), and it's a fine recording, it's just not special like the Manze/Egarr Op. 5 Violin Sonatas. And I guess that set the Corelli bar pretty high for me.
