[livejournal.com profile] think_too_much just came back from Trader Joe's with a 10 lb. dark chocolate bar. He said it should last until May. I highly doubt this. How long do you think it will last?

That depends; do you ever cook with chocolate, or are you just going to break off pieces and eat it?

I suspect both will happen.

Then I give it three weeks, barring availability of other desserts. (Although I suspect I'm underestimating just how much chocolate 10 lbs is.)

That's a lot of chocolate in three weeks.

The box is 17 3/4" x 12 1/2"

Okay, a month. It also depends on how many visitors you have. But once you start eating chocolate, it disappears awfully quickly...

Mid to late February. The holidays are a time of excessive availability of desserts. Bake cookies!

well, I'm guessing that it may start to go rancid about 2 months from now. Question is, will you still eat it if there's any left then...

It has a "sell by" date sometime in 2009.

I've never seen chocolate go rancid. But then, I usually keep chocolate bars in the refrigerator so that I don't have to worry about them melting on hot days (I grew up somewhere where it did occasionally get hot enough in the summer that chocolate would melt in a kitchen cabinet).

That depends how much help he has. I've seen 5 determined people make quite a dent in such a bar over the course of a weekend (a literal dent - we needed a hammer and screwdriver held chisel-style to break off chunks.)

When I asked the room a minute ago, [livejournal.com profile] carpenter said, "well, how many people can we get over there by tomorrow?"

I call it three weeks, although data on how long it took you guys to kill the York Peppermint Patties would be helpful.

Assume each bachelor eats a pound of chocolate a week. Scarily plausible.

Um...no.

But, there is the baking effect.

I think they lasted about a month.

We used to buy one of those for my grandfather for his birthday every year, back when he lived in New York and Trader Joe's hadn't reached the east coast yet.

Umm... I don't know. I have a 5lb one from my (other) grandfather, and it's strong enough that I can only eat about 1-2 square inches at a time. Sometimes when I go to eat it, I change my mind when I realize how much effort it will take to break a piece off, and then I remember that to eat it I'll have to suck on it, not chew it, so even if I do eat it it's often a very small piece.

On the other hand, on those rare occasions when I've found myself baking with hard chocolate, rather than cocoa powder, large chunks of it go pretty quickly.

I give it 2-3 months, depending on how much you use it for cooking, and how much you're just eating pieces of it.

What if you melt it and do fondue? That could cut down on the time substantially.

I was thinking I should do that at some point.
