In an experiment with airflow, I reversed the 120 mm fan in my computer case. I succeeded in creating positive pressure (no more dust bunnies, I hope), but the fan made an unacceptable clicking sound. A little experimenting, and I found that it's hitting something in the back of the case. So I unscrewed the screws part of the way, and hooked some rubber bands around the fan and the hard drive cage to pull the fan away from the edge of the case, and the problem is solved. Now both of my computers have rubber bands holding something in place. It's a good thing they don't get moved around too much.

Whee. I'm currently in the process of attempting to replace the fan on my iMac with a quieter one, but have determined that the place where the fan is plugged in is close enough to the CRT that I want to pick up a pair of electrician's gloves before proceeding further (mmm, capacitors). Also have determinted that the new fan has one more wire coming out of it than the old one (three versus two), so it's a little questionable whether it will even be installable, but I'll see what the plugs look like once I actually get access to them. Depending on what those wires actually are (and assuming I can determine that), I might just be able to splice them and leave one dangling, but that will be a last resort.

Fans should only need two wires. The third wire reports rotation speed. Most motherboard fan connectors are three pin - the connector may be a three pin connector with only two wires attached.

What did you get for a quieter fan?

Yeah, I figured that out with a little research. I just couldn't see the connector on the old fan, so I couldn't tell what it looks like.

I got a Nexus Real Silent Case Fan, which got a good review on silentpcreview.com.

Good choice. SPCR knows what they're talking about.
