Nov. 6th, 2008 08:35 pmSo I'd been holding off on putting up the magnetic knife holder until we replaced the table against that wall with a smaller piece. But that's been out of stock for a month-and-a-half, and I'm getting tired of just having the knives sitting around. Today, I realized that, so long as I hit the studs, there's no reason not to put the rack up, because I'm not going to move it off the studs, even though I'm putting a smaller piece on the wall.
So I put the first screw in where I think the stud is. Drywall all the way back. So I slide over an inch and try again. Still nothing but drywall. So I open up the hole a little and put a drywall anchor in, no problem. I go to the other side make the hole (I don't have a drill, so I'm just using a screw to make a hole in the drywall then using the threads to expand the hole big enough to where I can hammer in the anchor). 3/4 of the way in with the anchor, it starts bouncing back out. Odd. So I slide over six inches and try again. First hole no problem, anchor goes in fine. Second hole, same obstacle. So I flip the rack around, use the second successful anchor, and try a third hole. Again, there's something back there. Oh, and there's a spacer on the knife rack so my screws aren't long enough to hold in whatever is behind the drywall.
Apparently, I can't find studs when I'm trying, and I find studs when I'm not trying. And I have very strangely spaced studs. And now there are two anchors and four additional holes in my kitchen wall (spaced such that there's no way to cover all of them with the installed knife rack...if that ever happens) and no knife rack to show for it. I'll get longer screws this weekend and try again.
Go me.

Date: 2008-11-07 10:38 am (UTC)Ex-BT and I had a horrific time trying to mount my tv last year, until we realized that because my building used to be an office building, the interior walls have metal studs, and can be spaced totally differently from exterior walls.
