I'm contemplating upgrading to a paid Flickr account for Israel pictures, as well as a future photo repository. Is this a great idea? A terrible one? Should I look at some other site instead?

You might want to look at Google's Picasa first. I don't know what kind of limitations there are to Picasa, but it probably worth looking into.

My understanding is that Picasa is superior photo management software but that the online part of the system leaves something to be desired. Personally, I have Picasa on my machine and host photos online on Flickr.

I don't have a huge number of photos online, and for what I do Picasa is great. I don't know if it fails at larger numbers. I also don't like having my photos public, but I don't want people to have to sign in to see them. With Picasa you can set it up so to view the album, people need a direct link. You can also make your photos public, or make some public and some private, I think. I've never used Flickr so I don't know what the main differences are.

This is a very good point. As long as I keep my pictures manageable in size, I'm a long way from hitting my GB cap on free Picasa. I think it's lacking in Web 2.0 features, but I don't really care about that - I'm not really interested in networking based on my pictures, I primarily just want to share them with people I know.

I paid for flickr and I use it all the time. I love how the stuff is publically accessible without a log-in to a casual user (unlike all those sites that are trying to sell you prints), but with some (weak)controls over access. I love the creative commons aspect.

I bought a paid Flickr account, and I've been enjoying it. As with LJ, I can set viewing permissions for individual photos (though so far, I haven't figured uploaded much that falls into the ground between "totally public" and "me only", so I can't really speak to how that works). The main selling point for me was the ability to have unlimited and nested sets of images.

I've been shrinking all my photos to 800x600 before uploading, partly out of habit (because I'm unaccustomed to theoretically unlimited space) and partly out of propriety (I'd rather retain sole possession of the full-size images). I haven't started watermarking my images before uploading, but I keep thinking about it. The downside is that it's a pain.

I love the Creative Commons aspect, and it was really awesome the one time one of my photos was used (and credited properly) in someone's blog as a result.

Alex is rather passionate about SmugMug - you might want to check it out.

Yes, he's mentioned it to me several times. It is, however, considerably more expensive than either Picasa or Flickr, and it doesn't have a free version.
