1) Why should I care?

2) I don't text message. Is there still a point?

3) What's the best internet-based way to follow?

EDIT: Just telling me no doesn't accomplish anything. Telling me why I shouldn't want anything to do with twitter is much more productive. Telling me what you use Twitter for is also productive.

1) Because by not being on twitter, you miss out on one of the many venues by which to experience my ascerbic wit.

2) Neither do I, so I wouldn't know.

3) Sub-cranial electrode graft. Barring that, probably the web-page, which has some of the most adorable error images ever.

1) People using twitter tend to use it more religiously then Facebook/Myspace, therefore you get more info. Also, you can learn about famous people's lifes/products, if you care. I can't answer that question.

2)Twitter and txting don't have to go hand in hand, I haven't even set up my phone yet.

3) I am a big fan of twitterfox, a firefox addon that sits in the bottom right and counts how many new tweets I have to read. It does have a little pop up when a new tweet comes in, but you can turn it off.

1. You like getting random text messages from your friends, either because they entertain you or you find getting text messages validating in some way.
2. Only if you're either really bored or starved for even the most superficial human contact.
3. Like Eliza said, RSS.

1. Even if you don't want to keep up with people you know, sometimes awesome events show up if you follow celebrities you want to see.
2. Yes. I don't get text messages from Twitter, just read on my computer, though sometimes I text TO Twitter or use an iPhone client.
3. Do clients count as Internet-based? A client, then. Which one depends on OS.

More seriously, I like twitter because I have the sort of job where I usually only spend a few minutes in a web browser at a single stretch. As you can notice from my general lj history, this means I don't really make lengthy summary updates, but rather post links and quips that occur to me in between posts. YMMV, of course.

Also, yeah, I really can't be bothered to listen to y'all's boring asses for longer than it takes to read, say, your post above. 140 characters is about the limit to how much as I can make it through before I stop caring.

It might be worth trying just to try and teach yourself some discipline. :-P Like all those bizarre structural rules and sonnets.

Not that I don't twitter-spam sometimes.

1) I have received free stuff, better customer service, had ungoogleable computer questions answered, and met interesting local techies, as well as getting news that I wasn't necessarily seeing from Google News & Reader & [CHAT].

2) Yes. I know very few people who use the texting interface. Most Twitter addicts have a net-enabled phone with a Twitter client when they're mobile.

3) Spaz is a decent AIR client; Tweetdeck or DestroyTwitter let you group people, if you're following too many.

You shouldn't use Twitter if you're easily distracted, or tend to lose yourself in information overload.

1. It's another tool. It may be the tool of choice for some people/groups of interest.
2. Probably. But that seems like a good indication you'd probably find it annoying. (My complete lack of interest in Twitter stems from a similar space.)
3. RSS will probably be the most transparent addition to your extant routine, but I have no first hand experience. See parenthetical comment above.
