Mmm, the goodness that was Alumni weekend and Appel Farm
Work has been steadily getting better, have been wrestling for a while with this box culvert up in Bucks Co, trying to figure out if it needs to be posted (weight restrictions). I'm poking through the plans with not much luck, they really aren't very good. So it's try this set of numbers, see if the numbers make sense, check with Ron, see if he thinks it makes sense, etc. Also, Friday was fun because I helped set up new tablet PCs for the inspectors. Very nifty. Afterwards, drove up to Norristown to fetch
tirerim, then back to Bryn Mawr to hit home and add
fiddledragon to the fold, then down to Alumni Weekend. So good to see folks, there was much hanging out and good times. I horribly screwed up a game of Acquire I probably should have won (got cocky and didn't protect my majority in both of the dominant companies, ended up 4th by ~$4000), but oh lord was it good to game with
carnap and
q10. Then came the microwave, and all the things you aren't supposed to do with it. Marshmellows are tame, grapes rock, lightbulbs are amazing. Ivory soap is pretty sweet too.
It was raining. So be it. The wedding was good, very weird to see folks so close to my age getting married - I don't see myself getting married in three years - that's a really scary thought. Then down to Appel Farm with Eric. Got their just in time for Erin McKeown's set, which was very good. I think she was better last summer in Haddon Heights, but the larger band may have had something to do with that. It's still quite amazing the variety of sound she can put out with just her guitar and a drummer. Some new stuff, some old stuff (which was great). La Petite Mort will likely always remind me of
appelfarm, as I've heard her play it there twice, and she always has us shout "Oh Estelle" back at her. I think she wanted us to throw mud three years ago. The rain was on and off, but I didn't really feel it so long as the music was good (which it pretty much was). Los Lonely Boys were amazing. If you haven't yet, check 'em out! The three brothers from Texas with their self-described "Texican Rock 'n Roll" had a bit of Blues Brother showmanship to their show, but their musicianship was awesome. Henry (guitar) is a beast. He came out of nowhere with a great harmonca solo, and in their last number, he and Jojo (bass) were over the top. At one point, Henry was soloing on the high strings of his guitar, and Jojo was playing the bassline underneath him. Four hands, one guitar. They did the classic behind the back, and then Jojo starting letting gravity do all the work, holding the bass by the neck in his left hand, letting it fall or throwing it up to shift hand position. His right hand was nowhere near the instrument. Henry picked this up quickly, but I think it's more impressive on bass. Shawn Colvin was a bit dissapointing, playing mostly slower stuff. We were also really far back, and on the dance platform stage, it's really hard to see anything unless you're really close. Jonatha started out very good and ended phenomenally, playing Steady Pull, How Deep Is Your Love (+ Stairway, as she is wont to do live), and Linger, totally rocking with the band. At this point, our day at the farm was done, given that we were completetly soaked and neither of us are really Ani fans. Back to Swat for more hanging out and gaming, played an extremely tight game of Puerto Rico with
carnap,
creed_of_hubris,
ccommack, and Benitez. Third by four points playing factory/guild hall. Had a nice talk with
carnap about housing, among other things. I think ML will be fine, and really after Dana, there's no place I'd rather be. Home at 3.30, crash.
Slept until 9, rolled over and slept until 12, bailing on Dim Sum. Went back down to swat mid-afternoon, hung out with folks, played an absolutely wild name game with
showergrrl,
jere7my,
creed_of_hubris, Larry, and Laura. Much with the funny. Then to dinner with older folks (was the only current student by several years), good to see people, don't spend enough time with them, should work on that this summer.
Ugh, back to work! 6.15 is too early. New intern, Dan from UDel. More wrestling with the culvert, and starting to learn E-Forms, possibly the world's biggest kludge. BMS is this great old database that handles all the bridge information. Somebody thought it would be a good idea to write a program that can talk to it while allowing bridge inspectors to essentially enter information right into it while at the bridge. That's a good idea. Implementing it in MS Access wasn't, or at least it wasn't done right. It really wants a totally custom front end and back end or something, because however it's currently set-up blows goats. But I'll spare you.
Singer Songwriter Weekend. July 16-18. Fountains of Wayne, Nelly McKay, Shemika Copeland, Michael McDermott (who I'm starting to like more and more), Old 97s, North Mississippi All-Stars, Sarah Harmer.
New Old 97s Album!! Drag it Up, due in stores July 27.
Okay, that's better. Those of you who aren't here, miss ya.
