If you regularly carry a cell phone but do not keep it on your person (i.e. in a pocket, on a belt, in a sporran, etc.), what do you do with your phone when you're at home? How do you deal with the possibility that your phone may be in an object in one room while you are in another (this seems like less of a concern when one is not at home, as it is less common to leave personal objects at a great distance from one's self in public places)?

Asking for a friend parent. Last night, I rescued an iPhone from the top of the toilet tank in the cabin in which we are spending the long weekend and returned it to the dresser in their bedroom, but this is a problem (as perceived by my brother and I) at home too.

I regulary carry a cell phone in that I have one and use it when I have to make a phone call or am expecting a call (and as an alarm clock). When home, I either lazily leave it in my Tote Bag of everything near the door or on a table near the door where I also keep my keys and work ID tag. It is on vibrate and I will hear it vibrate from anywhere else in the apartment if it is in one of these two places. Unless I've let the battery run down. Or left it on my pillow where it was serving as an alarm clock. . .

Will you hear your phone if you're making/cleaning up dinner? If you're watching a movie?

TV/movie, yes. Cooking, yes. Washing dishes - maybe? I have an apartment, not a house, so the kitchen is near the front door. If I leave it out to vibrate on the table, more likely, but I don't reliably remember to leave it out to vibrate on the table.

I keep my cell phone in a jacket pocket. If I'm expecting a call I put it on the coffee table or couch or desk (or occasionally pants pocket), but otherwise it stays in the jacket pocket. This way it never gets lost or accidentally left at home when I go out. If I'm in another room, I miss the call. If it's important, they'll leave a message or call back. Or I'll call back if I hear it from another room but just barely don't get there in time. It's just like having a home phone, basically, except it doesn't ring as loud so I'm less likely to hear it until halfway through the ringtone song, and therefore less likely to answer it on time.

I keep my cell phone in my "belt pack", which is actually a Lowepro Apex 30 AW camera bag, but it goes nicely on my belt, and holds my credit card holder thing, cash, and phone, plus a few other random things. When I'm somewhere where I don't want to wear it, I put my phone in my pants pocket.

mine lives in my purse. Sometimes I don't hear it, not so much because of the distance and padding but because I turn the ringer off. If the phone isn't in my purse, it's attached to my computer. I try not to leave it somewhere random, that would be bad.

Mine lives in my pocket, except when my clothing doesn't accommodate that. Then it lives in my purse, or my jacket if it's jacket weather, or plugged into a charger that lives in a specific place. The end of jacket weather and me losing my cell phone for more than a week do appear to be correlated, though. I keep the ringer off for work (and I think the vibrate feature has mostly died) so finding it is a pain if I leave it somewhere odd.

I have a specific place where I plug mine in charging, and that is where it lives when I am home. Or I'll bring it in and plug it in a specific spot near the bed if I read in it before bed or listen to netflix or youtube to sleep. Or it is in a specific pocket when I go places. If I have clothes without pockets, this is problematic and I have to create a solution if I am going somewhere.

I'm tempted to say that I deal with this possibility by having a single-room home, but I suppose that the possibility that I might not hear my phone ringing is not actually the reason why I have a single-room home.

Still, it is effective!
