Singin' every song that the radio played
Jul. 17th, 2004 11:21 pmAnd there was day two of singer-songwriter weekend, and there was much goodness
Nellie McKay and Mindy Smith were both extremely good. Nellie McKay played solo piano. The set was varied and quick moving. She can spit a lot of words out quickly. She got a lot of songs onto 'XPN, but they're all good. Mindy Smith also has had quite a few songs on XPN. She played acoustic guitar, with a mandolinist and acoustic bass. Also very good. I hesitated too long before deciding to buy her CD, and they sold out. Oh well, soon it may come by mail, if I push the right buttons.
The Philly locals in the round (Lauren Hart, Mutlu, and Jim Boggia) were decent, but nothing special. Then they finished by playing the Staples Singers's "I'll Take You There", which XPN has been using as the theme for there new building. It was great, and really got the crowd into it.
Michael McDermott completly rocked. As in absolutely amazing. I was likely going to buy his CD anyway, I certainly did after the set. I thought "Everything I've Got" was a touch weaker than the album version, but "Hellfire" was absolutely awesome.
John Ondrasik was also extremely good. He went back and forth between piano and acoustic guitar, with another acoustic guitar playing on everything. He hit all three albums, getting "Bella's Birthday Cake" from Message for Albert (I think the best of the three), the requisite "Superman" and "Easy Tonight" from Americatown (and just about everyone was singing along to both), and a handful off the new album. The songs from Americatown got as good or a better response than anything off the new album, with 100 Years (which isn't that good a song, IMO) and Devil in the Wishing Well (same feeling) coming the closest. Really, I don't think Battle for Everything is all that good, though I haven't heard the whole thing. But Ondrasik really interacted with the crowd well, and I'd forgotten just how good his voice was.
Oh my lord, Shemika Copeland was simply amazing. The band was rockin' and wow does she have a voice. We were standing through the whole set, and people were up and dancing and clapping there hands for really the first time in two days. 2 AM was fantastic, and the encore (Let the Good Times Roll) was fabulous and went on for a while, which was good, because the set otherwise seemed short.
In all, fun times, fun times. Hopefully tomorrow won't be too wet.
