Date: 2004-10-09 11:04 pm (UTC)Wow. Never thought I'd see those words.
My opinion.
Date: 2004-10-10 04:31 am (UTC)It's not like they don't care or that they're incompetent. They're just a handful of people working 9-to-5 trying to keep a massive network running 24/7. A massive network which is being used by many people who don't know what a firewall is, use Internet Explorer, and probably wouldn't bother installing a virus scanner if we didn't provide them with one.
It takes less than two minutes for worms to penetrate an insecure machine on a high-speed connection.
They have their work cut out for them.
Remember, it's not like a company where they can choose the computers on their LAN and configure them as they desire. They're stuck with what we give them. Which, sometimes, is complete and total crap.
Generally, I think this year's approach to security was a good one: stretch the network to only cover secure machines rather than letting anything on and then doing terrible damage control as worm and virus activity overloads the whole thing. Unfortunately, our Campus Manager software (brought to you by the Ciscopoly) is a clunky patchwork of different things, some of which are a bit overzealous in quarantining machines.
Barring a few instances of not thinking things through, the professional part of ITS has been pretty professional this year.
As for the student part of ITS, well, you can keep worshiping me, I don't mind.
