Damn you Deepest Sender, for erasing my post.

Linux is up and running on the box. It still doesn't post most of the time - I think it's a voltage problem (on startup, when it was attached to a monitor, it read over 4.5 V for +3.3). I'm inclined not to care, as long as it's stable (which it seems to be). As it's primarily a music storage box, I really don't care if it dies, it'll be an inconvenience, nothing more.

It still has several issues. Firstly, it crashes the router here at home. After a few hours of being connected, the router stops accepting new connections, and eventually shuts out the existing ones. I don't know why it's doing this. The other problem is that Samba doesn't work. I can see it on the workgroup, but when I try to connect, it says address not found, or something like that. I suspect it's a WINS/NetBIOS/etc. issue. This means I'm not going to worry about getting it working until I get back to school and I see how well it talks to the network there, where it'll be spending most of it's time for the next few months.

Discovered the MPC (musepack) codec last night, it's supposedly the "best" lossy codec. It, so the experts claim, is better at 160 +/- a bit Kbs than MP3 is at 320 kbs. There's no hardware support (but a WinAMP pluggin is all I need for now), but if I end up with an MP3 player, I'll just batch convert everything, assuming I get it ripped in the first place.
